What happens if I just ignore a debt collector?

gnoring a collector doesn't make the debt disappear, and it hands away your chance to control the outcome. The debt keeps growing, it can be sold to another collector, and — most importantly — if the collector sues and you don't respond, they can win automatically by default. But you do have rights, including the right to make them prove the debt is really yours.

There's a big difference between ignoring collection calls and ignoring a lawsuit. Screening calls isn't illegal and won't directly hurt you, but letting an unanswered debt sit means it can grow, get resold, and eventually turn into a court case. The single most costly mistake people make is not showing up to a lawsuit — a default judgment gives the collector everything they asked for without any fight at all. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you can demand written validation that the debt is yours, dispute it, and tell a collector how and when they're allowed to contact you. Knowing which debts are worth fighting, which are past their legal deadline, and which are worth settling is where a lot of money gets saved — or lost.
