How much does debt settlement actually cost?
Debt settlement has two costs: what you pay to settle each debt, and the fee charged by whoever negotiates it. Legitimate settlement companies generally charge a percentage of the enrolled debt (often in the 15–25% range) and, by law, can't collect that fee until a debt is actually settled. There can also be a tax cost on the forgiven amount.
he headline savings — paying less than you owe — is real, but it's important to see the whole picture. A settlement company's fee is usually a percentage of either the total debt you enroll or the amount they save you, and federal rules prohibit them from charging upfront fees before they've settled at least one of your debts. Beyond that fee, forgiven debt over $600 can be reported to the IRS as taxable income, and the process can temporarily lower your credit. None of that necessarily makes settlement a bad deal — for the right person it can still come out far ahead — but "how much does it cost" has to include the fee, the possible tax, and the credit impact, not just the discount. A trustworthy advisor will walk you through all three before you sign anything.
